The supervisory board of Servatius decided today (Wednesday 11.11) to permanently withdraw the campus Maastricht plan. An ultimate consultations Tuesday brought no solution.
The campus building of world-famous architect Santiago Calatrava is already postponed for half a year because of Servatius' financial problems. A thorough examination of estimates and budgets brought to light in early October that the cost of the project already had risen to 200 million, almost double that at the start nearly ten years ago was counted.
Because the city of Maastricht, Maastricht University as wel as the Province of Limburg attached high values to the campus as an important part of education engine of the region, Servatius was hoping for a helping hand from these parties. Vain. The uncertainties and financial risks are too great, in municipal and county circles to bear.
The Supervisory Board now faces the serious decision to draw the line leaving Servatius with an expected 60 million euros on expected claims of injured contractors and suppliers.
